I listened to a lot of music this month, most of which is not in this mix. Key among the songs that inspired it, but are not here, is “Pig Feet” by Terrace Martin with features from Denzel Curry, Daylyt, Kamasi Washington, and G Perico. The Quietus’ “Albums of the Year So Far” was a big influence as well. It led me to Jeff Parker, whose NTS guest show led me to Eugene McDaniels.  Outlaw and Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse are both great in the same way that late-1960s Scott Walker is great.

This is my first mix made in Australia, and this reflects the fact that it is “winter” here — at worst 45(f)/7(c) with some rain — by offering something more in line for an Ithacan March. This was built around the inclusion of some demos (from Beyoncé, Prince, and Phil Collins) that I heard in different contexts and thought might work together. Also, as long as there’s some new(ish) Rosalía, that will always find a place here as well.

It’s also a bit longer (1:00:35) than the last few, so throw it on in the background and prepare to be occasionally surprised.

March 2019 pt. 2 — “It’s My Life”

Mark Hollis died last month. This mix began as an attempt to feature one of his biggest hits with Talk Talk (“It’s My Life”). While that song ultimately did not make it in, it informs the sounds I looked for in the others that did. The last one, “The Colour of Spring,” is from Hollis’s eponymous solo album released in 1998. The others fit under a strange and expansive umbrella which I will call: “things played in a weird club that exists nowhere.”

March 2019 pt. 1 — “can’t calm down”

This month I’ll be posting between two and three mixes, all of which capture an aspect of “winter in Ithaca.”

Winter in Ithaca lasts from November until…¿? It depends, but the latter months of it (March, April…the first week of May) are definitely the most confusing and distressing. This March it has been both -5 degrees F and 64 degrees F.

The title of this mix, “can’t calm down,” is taken from a song by Hand Habits, Meg Duffy’s solo project, which just put out the album placeholder. Her guitar playing can be heard on plenty of the other songs on this mix, and the whole thing is part of an unofficial series of mixes with more guitars and fewer bleeps and bloops ( ¿”guitars > bleeps/bloops”?).
